Sony Camcorder uploading problems. Help?

I just bought a Sony Handycam DCR-HC48 with mini-DV tapes, but I can’t upload any video to my Dell desktop (which runs Vista). The guide book suggests I connect with a 1394 cable, but none was included. Instead, the box contained a 1394 that splits into red, yellow, and white video cables (but those are only for running to TVs) and a USB connector (but this will not translate video, only still images apparently). What do I do? Am I missing something, or did Sony not put everything in the box?

Unfortunately, most manufacturers do not include the firewire cable with their digital camcorder. You’ll have to purchase the firewire cable yourself – just make sure that the plug (either 6 pins or 4 pins) match the firewire port on your computer.

Usually firewire (1394) cable is not standard for camcorders as there are different pc/laptop-end firewire pin configuration (4, 6 PIN) depending on pc/laptop brands. However, USB cables are supplied as standard since almost all pc/laptop use standard USB.
If by this time, you still haven’t got the rite firewire cable, video capture can also be thru USB as I had experienced few years back with my old Dell laptop (no firewire slot). USB is slower but still can do. I then posted a question in answers on the procedure for video capture and the best answer was/is (am still using it) thru Windows Movie Maker.
    a. Set the camera mode to play recorded video.
    b. In the Movie Maker Tasks pane/Capture Video, click Capture from video device.
    WMMaker help is very detailed.
