Slider switch on camcorder battery – what for?

I have purchased a camcorder battery (cgr-d16).
It has a slider switch on the back, but the two positions are not labelled.
Does anybody have any knowledge about such batteries and what the switch is for?

Some batteries have a switch where either the red or black side is exposed. This is to help you remember which battery is charged in your camera bag. You can chose one color for charged and then flip the switch once its discharged so you will recognize it as discharged.
