JVC GZ-HD30 Everio camcorder review
Filed under: camcorder reviews

Jim Radford demonstrates the highlights of the JVC GZ-HD30 Everio brand 1080p camcorder, with a few examples and narration that were all recorded with this small handheld camera. He also explores a few of the accessories that can be added to make this a very versatile and quality purchase for the semi- and amateur videographer who is into high definition imaging. The unit comes with all the Cyberlink suite of software, which makes conversion of the raw AVCHD OR MPEG2 footage from the HDD or micro SDHC a snap. Shop price for this gem that was introduced in 2008.

    Very well done. I …
    Very well done. I am also having trouble converting video footage from it’s original format to you tube or Facebook. Can you recommend a web page or instruction material for computer illiterate dummies?. Thanks for your time.

    @VinHeffernan This …
    @VinHeffernan This is the RAYNOX HD-6600PRO 0.66X WIDE ANGLE 55MM 52MM 58MM LENS by Digital Innovations — I think I bought it on Amazon, but it is available elsewhere and for $120+ US. It has minimal distortion, but takes sharpness down a notch — not very noticeable. Made for consumer HD cams. Canon and Sony make one too. Jim

    @VinHeffernan I get most of my stuff from B&H Photo in New York by mail order — but many photo stores will carry it, or order it for you.

    @VinHeffernan Just …
    @VinHeffernan Just save to an uploadable format for HD and YouTube … ie720p in WMV or MOV, translated via your Cyberlink or similar editing software or conversion software… and then uploaded in the usual manner. You can’t upload the ‘native’ raw TOD (MPEG) or MTS AVCHD) file types from JVC cameras…. which is the burden of this camera. Must be converted to other file types like WMV or MOV for YouTube.

    Thanks. Wide angle …
    Thanks. Wide angle lens is especially useful in tight quarters, and scenics – most anywhere, esp. high-def for interviews to see more than a pretty face. But adding glass can reduce sharpness slightly, and a poor one can cause image distortion or shoot-thru masking. You get what you pay for.too. Jim

    Still shots come up brilliantly, check facebook page Perth Poetry Club, I have loaded heaps of photos in their gallery. But how do you upload the videos, the software has me stuffed, it just doesn’t seem to want to do that I ask. Using HP Dv6 laptop. Love the camera.

    @BobbysNutz The reason a lot of people like wide angle lens is that they can get up in close to people talking and get good audio.

    Well done a very good review. You should look into doing a few more. p.s. what is the benefit of using a wide angle lens? Will it distort the picture?

    I first assumed you …
    I first assumed you were a noob and didn’t realize the lag would be due to download, not the video itself. But then I realized that even after I paused it to let it download first, it still had a problem playing. Not sure what the deal is with that. Trouble decompressing or decoding maybe??
