$30 Jazz DV151 mini flash camcorder

I saw this on the shelf at Wal-Mart for $29.86 and couldn’t resist. It’s about the same size as a Flip, DXG, or Kodak mini flash camcorder, but it’s much cheaper! It uses 2 AA batteries and records 320×240 30fps MJPEG video and 24kHz ADPCM audio onto any regular SD flash card. They even give you an AV output jack and a USB extension cable. It has a 1.5″ LCD which flips around so you can view it from either the front or back. The built-in microphone is surprisingly high quality and also very sensitive, so in high noise conditions I would recommend covering it with a piece of foam or felt so the audio won’t come out clipped and distorted (as it was went I went under the blowers in the car wash).

@OreoHT The camcorder came with a little CD but I never used it. You don’t need any driver. You just copy the AVI video files over from the memory card to your computer, and you can edit them with Windows Movie Maker or upload them directly to YouTube.

I find it hard to believe that this device records at 30fps. It looks more like it’s recording at 15fps and then doubling the frames when it writes to memory. Other videos I’ve seen of the DV151 have the same appearance. I’m sure someone could check the actual framerate with the right apparatus.

For such a cheap camcorder, the sound quality is really good! My cheap Aiptek camcorder was more expensive than this one, and the audio is much worse!

Mine only records at 320×240. Perhaps they have an updated model now than can do 640×480, but mine doesn’t.

    QUESTION: You say …
QUESTION: You say this is a “Jazz DV151″, and recorded this clip at 320×240. — I bought one and it is able to do 640×480 as well as 320×240. Both resolutions at 30fps. — My question is did your model do 640×480 or only the 320×240 as you stated? — Sorry if I missed a 640×480 clip if you posted one. Can you do another with a resolution comparison?

I usually hold down the record button until I know for sure it is recording, then I let go. If I just quickly push the record button sometimes it doesn’t actually start recording. Try that, and if that doesn’t help, contact the manufacturer for help.

    Take out the …
Take out the batteries when you’re not using it. The power button just seems to turn off the display, it doesn’t actually power down the camera, so it drains down the batteries even if you have it “turned off.”

    YouTube’s …
YouTube’s low-quality codec filters out the grainy effect of the camera and replaces it with a blocky effect instead. So depending on which effect you think is worse, it might seem to improve the quality when you upload the Jazz’s videos to YouTube.

    You may need to …
You may need to format the SD card. I don’t know if they can do that with the Jazz. You may need to pop the card into another device (such as a digital camera or computer card reader) that has the capability to format SD cards. Also note that high-capacity SD cards (SDHC) will not work in the Jazz. You can only use regular SD cards!

    Yes, it’s light …
Yes, it’s light blue. When you plug it into your computer and turn it on, it should show up as a “Removable Disk” drive. Open it up, then click on DCIM and then 100DSCIM. Your videos will be in that folder, in .AVI format. If you don’t need to do any editing, you can directly upload these files to YouTube.
